The author also tells attorneys how to build their reputations through effective marketing, public speaking and the like. She shares pointers on how to make ever-important networking easier and more effective.

Ms. Schmidt suggest a lot of good marketing strategies, some of which are tried and true; for example, she recommends that lawyers who are drafting written marketing materials (including their bios) should first carefully review those of their key competitors. This may seem obvious in its importance, but from my experience as a lawyer coach, all too few lawyers take the time to make this simple comparison. Perhaps after reading Ms. Schmidt's book, more attorneys will do so, following her roadmap for good marketing and client development habits.

If you want to know what is like to be an associate at a Big Law firm, then this book is it. What makes it unique is that author describes the experience on personal, almost day-by-day level (thereby making the reader feel or experience what it is like being an associate or at least what he going through as an associate).

The subtitle and graphic cover are a bit misleading. This is not an exciting legal thriller, but a down-to-earth, practical, and realistic first-hand account of the life of a first-year associate. While some of the figures are outdated (,000 salary for a first-year associate), the overall description of associate work and life is accurate.

I agree with other reviews that writing style is somewhat dry (especially compared to a book like Monkey Business by John Rolfe and Peter Troob), but I find this book more realistic and politically correct. The interactions this author describes are much more typical of the types of interactions lawyers and professionals have on a daily basis.

The author is a Harvard Law School graduate who works as a first-year litigation associate at a fictional white shoe law firm. I highly recommend it for anyone who is considering working in Big Law firm.

After all, lawyers at a basic level sell access to information, and computers hugely change how information is accessed and distributed/sold.

The title, with its inclusion of "end" is meant to be provocative. Lawyers tend to be somewhat mired in the past and resistant to change. I'm a lawyer, and there is resistance to changes in the way legal services are prepared and sold. There is a view that legal services are somehow different and special.

The first four chapters (The Beginning of the End?, The Path to Commoditization, Trends in Technology, and Disruptive Legal Technologies) lay out how information technology has affected other fields which were similarly resistant to change, and how provision of legal services has already changed in responce to new developments in computers. Susskind breaks down different aspects of legal services and discusses potential for changes in the way these are provided. For example, rote drafting is easy to picture as being done by computers. Even in a system where the lawyer physically types out each standard contract or pleading, that lawyer is probably using a form book and a form book translates directly into a cut and paste computerized form. However, even complicated anaylsis can be done differently. For example, medical diagnosis by computer can be done by having the patient answer yes or no to a series of questions. This works well even for complex conditions. Susskind discusses a program designed to do the same in commodities law and the reaction of an expert in the field (the computer program did as well as he and sometimes better, which surprised him but not that much).

The next four chapters (The Future for In-house Lawyers, Resolving and Avoiding Disputes, Access to Law and to Justice, The Future of Lawyers) look indepth at different roles lawyers play and for each role try to extrapolate changes that might occur in that role. The entire book is laced with examples, and footnotes are likely to point to websites or firms which already provide the types of service which Susskind thinks we will see more of. These chapters moreso. This isn't all theoretical. I particularly liked the discussion of court systems and the ways some of them have automated different aspects of the court in order to deal with heavy case loads. Some many examples discussed here, like electronic filing and docket searches are newer changes which now feel normal. I spent my last semester in law school clerking part time at an administrative court in which judges are located a 6 hour drive from the district in which their cases are tried. This is accomplished through telephonic and video hearings. That's a huge change that came in within the last 10 years, but now it's normal. I think the extent to which the clerks of courts have adapted to new technologies and the extent to which they haven't is more obvious to lawyers in the field, since this is a system which eventually gets interacted with by everyone but is removed from most lawyers' daily lives.

I highly recommend this book to people in the legal field or knowledge management. It is well worth hunting down or ordering a copy. This was a fascinating, and because of that quick, read. The examples provide a good resource for where we've been, and the predictions are well thought and and provocative glimpses of where we might go.

Debt and Bankruptcy (Ask a Lawyer) Review

Steven D. Strauss' Debt and Bankruptcy is an excellent, if not short, book on the personal bankruptcy process.

Because of its small size (around 140 pages, plus appendices), this is obviously not an exhaustive review of the entire legal process of bankruptcy, but manages to pack a lot of very useful and interesting information within its covers. I read the entire book over the course of a weekend, and was very impressed with how easy to read and understand the material was.

I have not read many other books on the bankruptcy process, but I certainly did learn quite a few useful things that I did not previously know from reading it.

Although the book briefly touches on other forms of bankruptcy, Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 are the two, main types covered. There is a strong bias towards Chapter 7, which is probably the best solution for the majority of consumers seeking debt relief under bankruptcy protection.

Strauss' writing style is enjoyable and to the point. Most chapters are fairly brief, and delve right into the subjects at hand. There are some examples sprinkled throughout the book, but they are extremely limited in scope, and usually only a few sentences long. However, the information presented elsewhere makes the law easy enough to understand that examples are largely unnecessary.

I certainly enjoyed reading this book, and found it very useful, informative and entertaining. It is certainly well worth the modest cover price. For those of you contemplating personal bankruptcy, this is an excellent resource, especially if you are largely unfamiliar with the bankruptcy process itself. My only complaint is that it could have obviously been much longer and more detailed. Still, for its size, you are definitely getting your money's worth.
